Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why should I row?
The benefits of rowing are many. Below are some comments made by current members of our team:
“I’m in great shape and it helped me in other sports."
“Traveling and racing in other cities and in Canada is challenging and fun.”
“It’s different and the team is really cool.”
“I love being on the water.”
“Going fast in a boat is a great feeling.”
I've never rowed before.
That's okay. Most of our new rowers have never participated in the sport before. As a new rower, or novice, you will spend most of your first season rowing with and competing against other novices. If it's something you're interested in, the sooner you can start the better.
When do we practice?
Early season practices alternate between mornings and afternoons using facilities at GIHS and the Wyandotte Boat Club. When the weather and sunrise permits, we will spend most of our time practicing in the morning on the water. Morning practices provide the best conditions for rowing. Also, since practice is before school, most of your afternoons are free.
How much does it cost?
We work very hard to raise funds to offset the cost of our season. Many GI rowers have been able to pay for entire seasons through participation in team and individual fundraisers. No one with financial concerns will be denied a spot on the team. The Grosse Ile Rowing Club will work with all individuals to minimize all costs involved.
How do you train for rowing?
Our training program involves time spent on indoor rowing machines, or ergs, lifting weights, other cross-training activities and ultimately, rowing. The physical benefit gained through rowing makes it an excellent cross training sport.
What if I can’t swim?
That's okay. The safety of our rowers is our primary goal. Rowing has inherent risks and accidents can happen. However, we work with all of our athletes to develop on-water comfort and safety.
What if someone said ______ about rowing?
The most important thing you can do is find out for yourself. The coaching staff can answer any questions you may have. It would be a shame to miss out on a great opportunity / experience because you made decisions based on faulty information.
