Rowers Compete in State Championship Regatta

MILFORD, OH – High winds could not stop the Grosse Ile High School rowing team from competing in the second Scholastic Rowing Association of Michigan (SRAM) State Championships over the weekend.
Several crews advanced to finals including the Women’s Varsity 4+, Men’s Varsity 4+ and Men’s 2- (pair). Lauren Wenneman, Monica LaPointe, Elena Herfi, Stephanie Johnson and coxswain Will Evans finished third in the Varsity 4+. Costa Ciungan and Michael Sitek won the program’s first official State Championship in the men’s pair.
Grosse Ile’s head coach Scott Sitek, who is also a member of the SRAM executive committee was pleased with his team’s performance as well as the success of the regatta. “When we started the organization a couple years ago, this is very close to what we envisioned. It’s exciting that high school rowers in Michigan now have the opportunity to be considered the best in the State,” said Sitek. “It’s also exciting that our rowers lay claim to one of those titles.”
Grosse Ile will race again next Saturday, May 23
in London, Ontario Canada at the Western Ontario Secondary Scholastic Championships.
